Saranda is further south of Gjirokastra. In fact, it is very close to the borders and lies opposite Corfu Island, which belongs to Greece and can be seen from the mainland. This city is famous for its fascinating rocky beaches and clear blue sea; therefore it is preferred by many new couples as a honeymoon destination.
In addition to its splendid Riviera, Saranda has other natural beauties and cultural landmarks. Near Saranda there are the ruins of the old city of Butrint and also there is the amazing spring of the “Blue Eye”, which is the source of a small lake nearby too.
Some of the cultural landmarks are the Quadrangular Castle of Butrint and the Monastery of Mesopotam. The former was built in the beginning of the 19th century by Ali Pashe Tepelena as a defensive means against the French army, which was based on Corfu Island. The later dates back to the pagan ages, when it was considered a temple. It has got old icons depicted inside its walls, as well the remainder of ancient towers, which were the outposts of the monastery.
